Galveston Cruise Drink Packages Compared: Royal Caribbean vs. Carnival vs. MSC vs. Margaritaville at Sea (2026)
It's the question I hear more than any other from first-time cruisers: "Teresa, should I buy the drink package?"
And my honest answer is: it depends on your math — and your cruise line. That's why I compared Galveston cruise drink packages across all four lines sailing from the island, side by side, so you can decide before you sail instead of stressing about it at the pool bar.

Royal Caribbean: Deluxe Beverage Package
Price: ~$55–$120/day depending on ship (fleet median ~$84), plus 18% gratuity at checkout. Buying in the Cruise Planner pre-cruise saves 10–15% over onboard prices.
Covers: Cocktails, spirits, beer, and wine up to $14 per drink, plus specialty coffee, bottled water, sodas, mocktails, and smoothies. Works at Perfect Day at CocoCay too.
The catch: The $14 cap is the lowest of the four lines — order a $16 cocktail and you pay the $2 difference. And if one adult in the cabin buys it, every adult in the cabin has to buy it too. (As of September 2026, there's a formal exemption-request process for medical conditions, disabilities, or pregnancy — approval isn't guaranteed, and the exempted guest still buys a non-alcoholic package.)
Break-even: ~6 cocktails a day at the median price.
Carnival: CHEERS!
Price: $69.95/day pre-cruise ($83.94 with the 20% service charge included) or $74.95 onboard ($89.94). Pre-purchase deadline is 11:59 PM the night before sailing.
Covers: Just about everything — cocktails, spirits, beer, wine up to $20 per drink, plus sodas, specialty coffee, energy drinks, bottled water, and milkshakes. Non-alcoholic drinks are unlimited and don't count toward the cap.
The catch: 15 alcoholic drinks per day, hard cap (6 AM to 6 AM), with a 10-minute wait between orders. The all-adults-in-the-cabin rule applies with zero exceptions — Royal Caribbean at least has an exemption process; Carnival doesn't. And here's the big Galveston quirk: on Texas sailings, CHEERS! doesn't activate until 6 AM on Day 2 due to Texas liquor law. You pay full package price but get one fewer day of it.
Break-even: ~6–7 drinks a day. But factor in that lost first day on Galveston sailings!
Non-drinkers: CHEERS Zero Proof ($29.99/day pre-cruise) covers specialty coffee, mocktails, milkshakes, and energy drinks — no alcohol, no 15-drink stress.
MSC: Premium Extra
Price: $85/day prepaid ($98 if you wait until onboard) on 7+ night Caribbean sailings — and here's the beautiful part: gratuity is already included. The $85 you see is the $85 you pay. No other line does this.
Covers: All drinks up to $16 per drink — cocktails, premium spirits, wine by the glass, champagne by the glass, specialty coffee, the works. (Note: MSC simplified its packages in late 2024 — the old Easy and Easy Plus packages are gone on North American sailings. If you see them mentioned online, that info is outdated.)
The catch: 15 alcoholic drinks per day under MSC's responsible-drinking policy. Package terms for cabin-mate requirements aren't published as clearly as the other lines — confirm at booking.
Break-even: ~6 drinks a day at typical $14 cocktail prices.
Non-drinkers: The Alcohol-Free package ($28/day prepaid) is one of the best values of the four lines for coffee and mocktail lovers.
Margaritaville at Sea: Ultimate Beverage Chill
Price: From $49.99 per person, per night when bought pre-cruise (price varies by sailing length), plus a 20% service charge. The cheapest headline price of the four — but remember most Margaritaville sailings are short 3–5 night cruises, so compare the total, not just the daily rate.
Covers: Beer, wine by the glass, cocktails, and specialty drinks up to $20 per drink, plus unlimited soda and bottled water, juices, and mocktails. 25% off wine and champagne by the bottle.
The catch: 15 alcoholic/specialty drinks per day. Specialty coffee from the onboard Coffee Shop, room service drinks, minibar, and those famous blender cups are NOT included. All adults 21+ in the cabin must buy it.
Break-even: At ~$60/day all-in, roughly 4–5 cocktails — the easiest package of the four to break even on.
Why it matters for Galveston: Margaritaville at Sea's Beachcomber starts sailing from Galveston in October 2027, with 4–7 night itineraries. A whole new budget-friendly option for Texas cruisers — worth watching.
The Rules That Apply on (Almost) Every Line
- Buy before you sail. Every single line charges more onboard — 10–20% more. No exceptions, no reason to wait.
- The cabin-mate rule will get you. Royal, Carnival, and Margaritaville all require every adult in the cabin to buy the package if one does. One drinker + one non-drinker sharing a room? Do the math for two packages, not one.
- Texas embarkation day is weird. Royal pours a limited lineup until international waters; Carnival's package doesn't even activate until Day 2. Don't expect a full package experience on day one out of Galveston.
- Port days change everything. You're off the ship 6–8 hours on port days. A port-heavy itinerary with 2–3 drinks a day is almost always cheaper pay-as-you-go.
So... Should YOU Buy It?
Buy it if: you'll average 5–6+ drinks a day (count coffee, water, and sodas — not just alcohol), your sailing has sea days, and everyone 21+ in your cabin drinks similarly.
Skip it if: you're a 2–3 drinks a day person, your itinerary is port-intensive, or there's a non-drinker in your cabin who'd be forced onto a full-price package.

- Compare the total, not the daily rate. A $60/day package on a 3-night cruise ($180) vs. an $85/day package on a 7-night cruise ($595) — the "cheaper" package isn't always the cheaper vacation.
- Watch for sales in the months before sailing — and if the price drops after you buy, most lines let you cancel and rebook at the lower rate.
The Bottom Line
No drink package is a scam and none is a steal — it's math, and now the math is different on every line out of Galveston. Run your numbers honestly, buy pre-cruise if they work, and skip it without guilt if they don't.
